010814: Whom Shall I Send?
Message: Whom Shall I Send?
I.
Introduction
a.
STL Theme Video:
3:15min
b.
During this
coming year we are going to have an interlocking theme for each of the sermons,
each one will be about a question that is asked in the Bible.
c.
Often the Bible
gets looked at as something full of answers (which it does have) but it is
amazing when you read the Bible how many Questions it asks, and not just silly
questions, but deep ones that go to the core of our life.
d.
So each week we
will look at one of those questions and hopefully by the end of the year see
ourselves more rooted in Christ as we grow together.
II.
Body
a.
Tonight’s
Question is found in Isaiah 6, we will read from 1-8
a.
Isaiah 6:1-8 – “ In the year that King Uzziah died,
I saw the Lord seated on a throne, high and exalted, and the
train of his robe filled the temple.
Above him were seraphs, each with six wings: With two wings they covered
their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they
were flying. And they were calling to
one another: “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD
Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory.” At the sound
of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook and the temple was filled
with smoke. “Woe to me!” I cried. “I am ruined! For I am
a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips,
and my eyes have seen the King, the LORD Almighty.” Then one of the seraphs flew to me with a live
coal in his hand, which he had taken with tongs from the altar. With it he touched my mouth and said, “See,
this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away and your sin
atoned for.” Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And
who will go for us?” And I said, “Here am I. Send me!””
b.
The question is”
Whom shall I send?”
b.
Give
a.
STL Video #2 –
2:36 min
b.
We as a youth
group give to STL, the can we send around each week goes to support
missionaries for our denomination in the ways described in this video:
equipment and transportation so they can do missions work
c.
I hope you will
make it a point to give this year: even if it is only a quarter a week, give so
that missions work can happen.
c.
Pray
a.
But notice they
gave us another thing we are supposed to be doing: praying
b.
We are to daily
lift up those missionaries to have wisdom, safety, and provision for their
needs.
c.
One way we help
remind you of that is through our seeds program, take a seed packet and put it
somewhere you will see it daily and pray!
Make a commitment to do this throughout the year: even it is only 30
seconds a day, you can make a big impact.
d.
So in the case of
STL the answer to “Whom shall I send?” is missionaries, we help them to be sent
but they are the ones going.
d.
Go
a.
The problem is
that we often get stuck there, but the answer isn’t that simple.
b.
We are all called
to do missions work once we are saved.
Jesus even tells us to “Go and make disciples” and it was directed to
his followers (anyone who is saved).
c.
God is looking
out at our youth group and asking us this question tonight, “Whom shall I
send?” Who is willing to go? Who is willing to sacrifice? Who is willing to share hope with the world
around them?
d.
I for one want to
be like Isaiah and cry back out, “Here am I.
Send me!” What about you? Anyone else want to say that? Is anyone else willing to be sent?
III.
Conclusion
a.
This sending
starts tonight, we are leaving here and going home, going to school tomorrow,
etc… we are sent to share God with our friends, family, and anyone else we
might come in contact
b.
But if last year
was the year of the Bible for our youth group (that was our focus, read your
bible), the year before was giving, this year would be the year of the
mission.
c.
We will be going
on a mission trip this summer in July.
And we are looking for people who are willing to answer God’s question
by saying, “Send me.”
d.
If you are
willing to answer that way, come to our meeting on Sunday, after the am service
and find out more.
e.
But for now let
me pray for you as you are sent out into your homes

Rescue #1 -- The Need for Rescue: 031313
Message: Rescue – The Need For Rescue
I.
The
Introduction of Sin
a. Illus: Act out Adam and Eve Story
II.
The
Spread of Sin
a. Sin had entered the world, like a great virus
that spreads it jumped from offspring to offspring, but it wasn’t content in
being something minor it was taking over.
b. Read Genesis 6:5-6 – “The Lord saw how great
man’s wickedness on the earth had become, and that every inclination of the
thoughts of his heart was only evil all the time. The Lord was grieved that he had made man on
the earth, and his heart was filled with pain.
So the Lord said, “I will wipe mankind, whom I have created, from the
face of the earth—men and animals, and creatures that move along the ground,
and birds of the air,--for I am grieved that I have mad them.”
c. 1656 years have passed since Adam was
created, since sin entered into this world and started an infestation, an
infection, and it had spread to the point that God says, “every inclination of
the thoughts of his heart was only evil all the time.”
d. God does end up destroying the earth with a
flood, which we will be talking about the next couple of weeks, but ends up
saving one man and his family.
e. But sin is still part of that man and ends up
spreading again to all his descendants.
f. You see this sin even now. People hate, people kill, people steal,
people rape, people abuse, people lie, people are arrogant, people put others
down, people gossip, people swear, people take God’s name in vain, people
ignore the needs of others, people divorce, people cheat, people don’t respect
authority, people accept bribes, people show partiality, people lust, people
get drunk and use drugs, people are gluttoness, people envy, people commit
adultery, people sleep with others when they aren’t married, people are greedy,
people are lazy, people are hypocrites, people fight, people disobey their
parents, people are full of sin!
g. And you are one of the infected, you are full
of sin too.
III.
The
Consequences of Sin
a. Like I said above there is a consequence to sin,
eventually it leads to destruction.
b. That destruction happens here on earth
i.
Destroys
relationships with humans (gap between us so they are difficult to maintain,
part of the reason there is always so much drama)
ii.
Destroys
relationship with God (gap between us and him, no longer a good relationship)
iii.
Makes
our life a disaster, with lots of consequences (jail, VDs, guilt, pain,
suffering)
c. That destruction happens when we die
i.
The
ultimate consequence of sin is death, or eternal death in hell.
ii.
This is
a no return place, once you die there is no second chance, you have made your
decision and you will be judged accordingly.
If you are still full of sin you will go to hell…for eternity.
IV.
Application:
You Need to be Rescued, can’t rescue yourself
a. There are only 3 choices really
i.
Not
worry about it and suffer the consequences
ii.
Try
something that won’t work
1. Other religions
2. Self-help books
3. Doing good works
iii.
Try
something that is guaranteed to work
1. Romans 6:23 – “For the wages of sin is death,
but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
2. Ephesians 2:1-5
a. It is by grace—something you didn’t deserve
that you are saved
b. He offers you a gift, forgiveness of the sins
you have committed and all you have to do is ask. You turn to Jesus who died to take those sins
away and ask for that free gift. You ask
him to rescue you.
b. Ask for any who want rescued for the first
time
c. Ask for any who want to ask God for rescue
again, because they have turned away from him and embraced sin.

Quantum Leap #3: Water Baptism -- 062012
Tonight we continued our series: Quantum Leap, by leaping back into my past when I was baptized. Baptism is part of the process of being a Christian (Matthew 28:19-20). We are called to be saved and become Jesus' disciples and the next step that is mentioned is being baptized in water. We also see discipleship/spiritual growth and evangelism as part of that process. In other places we see God calling us to Communion and Baptism in the Holy Spirit as Well. But Water Baptism is mentioned several times as the next step for christians to take after salvation. It is a symbolic ritual that reminds us of Jesus' death and resurrection as well as our own spiritual journey of dying to sin and being made alive in Christ. (Romans 6:3-4). There are many errors when it comes to ideas of water baptism. #1. Don't do it becuase others are. #2. Don't do it because you feel guilted into it. #3. Baptism won't forgive your sins, it is a sign of what has already taken place in your life, the forgiveness of your sins by Jesus Christ. #4. Baptism won't make you perfect, you will still sin and be a mess afterwards but it is part of the process of holiness that God has called us to. If you are saved and aren't baptized it is time to think about taking this step. Let me know if you are interested. We are doing baptisms at Maryhill on August 1st.

Quantum Leap #1 -- Salvation: 060612
Tonight we started a new series entitled Quantum Leap. In the show the main character bounced through time chaning the past for good. During this series I want to bounce through my life and use it to change the future for good. Tonight we read from Luke 15:11-32, the parable of the prodigal son. Some things to keep in mind when you read this passage: To ask for an inheritance before the death of your fathe would be about the same as saying, "You are useless, I don't need you, I just want your money, and I wish you were dead." Second, pigs were considered unclean animals, they shouldn't be eatan, they shouldn't even be touched. Third, runing for old men was conisdered disgraceful and beneath them. Finally, fatted calves were set aside for special occasions and were very expensive.
I grew up in a Christian House, we went to church all the time, I was fine with God. My parents liked Him and worshipped Him, so I did too. My parents read their bibles, so I did too. But ti was their faith, not my own. It was June 1990, I was 9 and I lived in a small town in Oregon at the time and my parents took my borther and I to Portland to see a group called the Power Team. The power team was a group that would break things to show God's power being used through them, at the end they presented a message from Luke 15. At the end fo the message they asked for anyone that wanted to come forward, just as the son returned home, we were returnign to God, asking him for forgivness. I went forward and prayed, making faith in God my own, not something I did because of my parents. I started a personal relationship with God that night and all of my sins were forgiven. I became saved at that moemnt. I was dead, but had been made alive again, I was lost, but had been found by God.
Do any of you find it amazing that God, represented by the Father in this story, was willing to take his son back home? Do you find it amazing that he didn't just make his son grovel at his feet begging for forgiveness, but ran out and forgave him instantly? do you find it amazing that God was willing to forgive everything that son had done. God is waiting for you to come home. He wants to forgive you and welcome you back. All that it takes is you deciding to go to Him, a simple decision that you want to have a relatioship with your Heavenly Father. And when you make that decision and start heading toward home, when you ask him for forgiveness, he will come running to you, loving you no matter what, forgiving you every thing you have done, not holding it over you, but instead celebrating that his sons and daughters who were dead are live again, who were lost are now found! Are you ready to go home?
I give tonight: A+

Red Shirt #4 -- Good Soil: 052312
Tonight we completed our Red Shirt series by looking at the last type of soil talked about in Luke 8:4-8, 11-15. This type of soil isn't a red shirt soil, but a gold shirt one. They are the ones that grow and mature and produce. It tells us about them in verses 8 and 15. It says they are seed tha fall on good ground, which means they end up growing and reaching teh full potential that God created them for. They grow, mature, thrive, and reproduce. The people described here believe in Jesus, accept him as their Savior, make him their master, and then go out and convert others.
It tells us that these type of people are defined by doing 5 different things. #1. They have a good and noble heart. This comes by allow God, through His Holy Spirit, to transform us. Then we resolve to do good and noble things, finding out what is good and noble, and actually acting on it. #2. They hear God's word. This could be by going to church, reading the Bible, praying, reading Christian books, talking with people about God's word, etc... #3. They retain God's word. We can do this by memorization and setting down markers to remind yourself. #4. They persevere. No matther what happens they hold onto their faith in God. They spend time with Him so they can learn trust. #5. They produce a crop. They actually go out and tell other people the good news about Jesus. These are signs that accompany a mature Christian.
I give tonight: B+
