012214: Where Are You?

Message: Where Are You?
I.                    Introduction
a.       During this coming year we are going to have an interlocking theme for each of the sermons, each one will be about a question that is asked in the Bible.
b.      Often the Bible gets looked at as something full of answers (which it does have) but it is amazing when you read the Bible how many Questions it asks, and not just silly questions, but deep ones that go to the core of our life.
c.       So each week we will look at one of those questions and hopefully by the end of the year see ourselves more rooted in Christ as we grow together.
d.      Illus: Have Groups Present their Plays
                                                             a.      Saul – Gordie/James
                                                            b.      Jonah – David/Sharon
                                                             c.      Elijah – Lacey/Karen
e.       Each of these stories had something in common, in each case the people in the story were hiding from God
                                                             a.      Saul hid from his destiny, his calling to be king.  He was afraid, yet God sought him out even though he was hiding because God had something important for him to do!
                                                            b.      Jonah knew what he was supposed to do but had ran from it doing his own thing.  He was going to hide as far away from God as he could think…but God sought him out so he could put him back on the right track, correcting his sinful choices.
                                                             c.      Elijah was depressed, scared, and in pain.  He felt abandoned and just wanted to die.  Yet God sought him out and gave him hope, healed his pain, and removed his fear by showing how powerful he was.
II.                 Body
a.       The first instance of this hiding is found in Genesis 3:6-9.  And this also where we will find our question of the night
b.      Read Genesis 3:6-9 – “When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it.  She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it.  Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and ty realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.  Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden.  But the Lord God called to the man, “Where are you?””
                                                             a.      When they sinned they had broken their relationship with God and felt dirty, thus they first try to hide their sin by covering up their bodies, hiding themselves from each other and the world around them.  Suddenly they felt exposed and ashamed, and could think of nothing better to do but to hide
                                                            b.      But then things get worse because they forgot about one part of the equation, God.  And now he is in the garden walking toward them.  What would he do when he found them?  Would he kill them, would he hate them?  So they hid.
                                                             c.      But God doesn’t just walk by, ignoring the problem.  Nor does he just walk up to them and say, “You dirty sinners come and get judged.”  Instead he calls to them, “Where are you?”  allowing them the chance to come out of hiding.
                                                            d.      Did God know where they were?  Yes, but he was seeking them out
                                                                                i.      Even though they were dirty, even though they were avoiding him, even though they didn’t deserve to have a relationship with God again, he went looking for them
III.               Conclusion (Things that are true for your life)
a.       We all hide at some point in our lives
                                                             a.      Some hide to avoid doing what God has called them to do.  Maybe this is with a calling in your life (to be a pastor, missionary, teach a SS class, be on worship team, etc…), sometimes this is making a lifestyle change (stopping hanging out with certain friends, getting out of a bad relationship, etc…)
                                                            b.      Some hide to avoid God correcting us from our sinful choices.  We turn up our music and tune out God (stopping praying, reading the bible, listening when in church), we like our lives how they are and don’t want to hear we are doing something wrong.
                                                             c.      Some hide to avoid God because we have lost our relationship with him and feel he might hate us or not accept us back.
                                                            d.      Some hide to run away from fear and pain, we are depressed and just want to die, so we hide from God and from the world, the pain is too great we don’t want anyone to find out, so we hold it in and smile.
                                                             e.      Maybe you are hiding tonight
b.      But God is seeking you out
                                                             a.      God wants to show you your purpose and walk with you as you live that out, you won’t have to do it alone.
                                                            b.      God wants to correct you when you are making sinful choices because he wants the best thing for you and to help you before things get worse.
                                                             c.      God wants to mend the broken relationship he has with you, not so he can punish you but so he can restore what has been lost between the two of you.
                                                            d.      God wants to take away your fear, pain, and depression by showing his power to you and giving you hope
                                                             e.      God is seeking you out, tonight he is asking, “Where are you?”
c.       If that is you tonight and you want God to find you, to guide, correct, mend, or heal, then I want you to do something brave tonight, everyone look at your table leader, and if that is you tonight and you want to stop hiding, tell your leader at your table right now, “I’m here.”
d.      I’ll pray and then you can talk at your table about this and be prayed for by your leader.

011514: Did God Really Say?

Message: Did God Really Say…?
II.                 Body
a.       Background: Creation, Adam and Eve Created and put in garden of Eden
b.      Read Genesis 3:1-7 – “Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?”  The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’ ” “You will not surely die,” the serpent said to the woman. “For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”  When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.”
                                                             a.      First of all the serpent isn’t a real snake…it is actually Satan, a fallen angel who is the enemy of God, and thus hates humanity, God’s creation.
                                                            b.      This is the first question found in the whole bible, “Did God really say?”
                                                             c.      The question is phrased in a way to be so obviously wrong Eve must correct it, “not eat from any tree?, no we can eat from any but one, the one in the middle (the tree of the knowledge of good and evil), in fact if we eat or touch the fruit we will die”
c.       Read Matthew 4:1-11 – “Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil. After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry.  The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.” Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’’”  Then the devil took him to the holy city and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down. For it is written: “ He will command his angels concerning you, and they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’ 15 ’”  Jesus answered him, “It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’’” Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor.  “All this I will give you,” he said, “if you will bow down and worship me.” Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan!  For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’” Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him.
                                                             a.      Thousands of years have passed, Jesus, the son of God, is now on earth and the old serpent is back, aka Satan.
                                                            b.      This time he asks Jesus to prove himself by doing 2 things, command stones to turn to bread, or to throw himself off a building and land unharmed.
                                                             c.      Then he finally tries to make a deal with him and have him worship him in exchange for the physical world.
                                                            d.      Jesus says no in each case.
III.               Conclusion (Things that are true for your life)
a.       Temptation will come…no matter who you are…even if you are following God’s leading
                                                             a.      Jesus is God and is still tempted
                                                            b.      Jesus is led by the Holy Spirit into this desert in order to be tempted
b.      Temptation often arrives at our time of weakness, which is often when things are going the best
                                                             a.      Jesus is fasting for 40 days…I have fasted for a day and I’m not in the right mind
                                                            b.      Sometimes the weak point is when things are best they have been, because we aren’t trying as hard to rely on God.  Eve had a great life at this point…yet that is when she was weakest.
c.       If we fall for the temptation, we are sinning, and sin leads to death and destruction for us and those around us
                                                             a.      The world falls apart after Adam and Eve sin, death enters it, and things go from perfect to horrible in a few generations.  It affected their lives (they are kicked out of the garden, they will suffer and have to work hard and will die) and the lives of those around them (from their kids to us).
d.      Temptation is always asking the question, “Did God really say?”
                                                             a.      Temptation is trying to get us to disobey God, so when we want to look at porn or when we want to make fun of someone, or when we want to get drunk, or we want to use drugs, or we want to steal, or we want to overeat, or we want to be lazy, or we want to cheat, each time we are tempted with that sin we are being asked… “Did God really say not to do that?”  “Is it really that bad?”
                                                            b.      Again, sin destroys those around us and ourselves...so yeah it is bad.
e.       Temptation is beaten when we know and use God’s word
                                                             a.      Eve and Jesus both apply God’s word as a way to supply truth to the temptation in order to defeat it and move on.
                                                            b.      Eve says they aren’t to eat or touch the fruit or they would die…the second part she adds to God’s word, or maybe Adam told her that was what God had said in order to keep her way from it.  But regardless she adds to it.  And I imagine she touches the fruit, doesn’t die and thinks, well maybe that wasn’t what God was saying, maybe he didn’t really mean it…and that is enough to get her to fall for the temptation.
                                                             c.       Jesus on the other hand quotes God’s word (scripture) during each of the temptations.  Even the one in which Satan quoted a scripture to him, he quotes another one back to show that Satan is taking it out of context (twisting the true meaning.
f.       Maybe you are struggling with a temptation in your life, and you want to find a way out…1st Corinthians 10:13 – “No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.”  God has given you a means to get out of temptation, it is through his word and by his help.  So don’t rely on yourself any longer, rely on him and his word!

010814: Whom Shall I Send?

Message: Whom Shall I Send?
I.                    Introduction
a.       STL Theme Video: 3:15min
b.      During this coming year we are going to have an interlocking theme for each of the sermons, each one will be about a question that is asked in the Bible.
c.       Often the Bible gets looked at as something full of answers (which it does have) but it is amazing when you read the Bible how many Questions it asks, and not just silly questions, but deep ones that go to the core of our life.
d.      So each week we will look at one of those questions and hopefully by the end of the year see ourselves more rooted in Christ as we grow together.
II.                 Body
a.       Tonight’s Question is found in Isaiah 6, we will read from 1-8
                                                             a.      Isaiah 6:1-8 – “ In the year that King Uzziah died,  I saw the Lord  seated on a throne, high and exalted, and the train of his robe filled the temple.  Above him were seraphs, each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying.  And they were calling to one another: “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD Almighty; the whole earth  is full of his glory.” At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook and the temple was filled with smoke. “Woe to me!” I cried. “I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the LORD Almighty.”  Then one of the seraphs flew to me with a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with tongs from the altar.  With it he touched my mouth and said, “See, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for.” Then I heard the voice  of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?” And I said, “Here am I. Send me!””
                                                            b.      The question is” Whom shall I send?”

b.      Give
                                                             a.      STL Video #2 – 2:36 min
                                                            b.      We as a youth group give to STL, the can we send around each week goes to support missionaries for our denomination in the ways described in this video: equipment and transportation so they can do missions work
                                                             c.      I hope you will make it a point to give this year: even if it is only a quarter a week, give so that missions work can happen.
c.       Pray
                                                             a.      But notice they gave us another thing we are supposed to be doing: praying
                                                            b.      We are to daily lift up those missionaries to have wisdom, safety, and provision for their needs.
                                                             c.      One way we help remind you of that is through our seeds program, take a seed packet and put it somewhere you will see it daily and pray!  Make a commitment to do this throughout the year: even it is only 30 seconds a day, you can make a big impact.
                                                            d.      So in the case of STL the answer to “Whom shall I send?” is missionaries, we help them to be sent but they are the ones going.
d.      Go
                                                             a.      The problem is that we often get stuck there, but the answer isn’t that simple.
                                                            b.      We are all called to do missions work once we are saved.  Jesus even tells us to “Go and make disciples” and it was directed to his followers (anyone who is saved).
                                                             c.      God is looking out at our youth group and asking us this question tonight, “Whom shall I send?”  Who is willing to go?  Who is willing to sacrifice?  Who is willing to share hope with the world around them?
                                                            d.      I for one want to be like Isaiah and cry back out, “Here am I.  Send me!”  What about you?  Anyone else want to say that?  Is anyone else willing to be sent?
III.               Conclusion
a.       This sending starts tonight, we are leaving here and going home, going to school tomorrow, etc… we are sent to share God with our friends, family, and anyone else we might come in contact
b.      But if last year was the year of the Bible for our youth group (that was our focus, read your bible), the year before was giving, this year would be the year of the mission.
c.       We will be going on a mission trip this summer in July.  And we are looking for people who are willing to answer God’s question by saying, “Send me.”
d.      If you are willing to answer that way, come to our meeting on Sunday, after the am service and find out more.
e.       But for now let me pray for you as you are sent out into your homes
